About Bas Hordijk's graduation project 'Perspective'

Perspective is an animated short film about humankind and its place in the bigger picture: "By putting the emphasis on abstractions and illumination, from a human point of view, the film explores the thematic and visual aspects of the street photographs I capture. The visual language is complemented by its sonic counterpart."

Hi Bas, congrats with your graduation! For starters, where does your love for photography and media come from?

I think capturing something and being able to say "Look, this is what I saw" is something extremely powerful, whether it’s been captured out in the real world or something you’ve thought up in your mind. At the same time, creating stuff is a great way for me to understand myself and the world around me better. There’s just so many things in life to experience and learn about.

F

Why did you choose Image and Media Technology at the HKU University of the Arts Utrecht?

What I like about the Image and Media Technology course at the HKU is the ability to tell stories, without being stuck working in one type of medium. The stuff you’ll learn is applicable to almost anything creative wise, even music and stuff. This leaves you free to create and to choose the right tools to tell the story.

F

What's your best memory about your study?

My best memory is probably from the beginning of my graduation year. By looking back and analyzing the work I’d made, I began to notice how much my subconscious mind has impacted the way I’ve been seeing/capturing the world around me. At the same time, this was also probably the scariest moment during my study.

F

What's the most valuable lesson you learnt during your study?

My study taught me to ask myself the right questions, to help me get the sharp focus needed within my own work. Conducting research by doing during my study, ultimately helped me to develop the right visual language with regard to the essence of my work.

What have you recently seen that you think is great creative work?

I stumbled upon this music video by a band called Lo! It’s bizarre, intense, visually stunning, and simplistic in its approach. The lighting, colours, camera movements, choreography, etc. all compliment the music perfectly. Also it reminded me of Beyond the Black Rainbow by Panos Cosmatos, which is one of my all time favourite films.

F

What are your plans in the near future?

I’ll be working on lots of animation/vfx and photography projects to further my knowledge of these mediums. I love to keep moving forward and learning something new everyday. Also, I'm really enjoying teaching Street Photography Workshops in Amsterdam, so this is something I'll keep focusing on as well.

F

Can you give one piece of advice to future students?

Try to create personal work for yourself besides the study assignments. For me it was tricky sometimes to focus on my personal work due to limited time, but ultimately this work helped me figuring out what I am really passionate about. In my last year I was able to use this work as a starting point for my graduation project.
